Treasure in Heaven: Walking with God in our Finances
By Dr. Aaron M Perez
"Cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you."
— 1 Peter 5:7 (NKJV)
Money is one of those things we can’t avoid. We need it to pay the bills, put food on the table, and prepare for the future. But if we’re not careful, money can quickly move from being a tool to being the thing that controls us. Jesus was clear about this when He said, “You cannot serve both God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24).
That verse reminds us that money is never supposed to be the master of our lives. God is. And when we get that order right, the way we view and handle our finances starts to change.
Where Your Treasure Is
In Matthew 6:21, Jesus tells us, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” That’s a tough truth because it asks us to stop and take a hard look at what we actually value. Do my financial decisions show that I value God’s Kingdom, or do they show that I’m clinging to temporary things?
This isn’t about shame — it’s about alignment. When our hearts are centered on Christ, even ordinary decisions about saving, spending, and giving can become ways to honor Him.
Choosing Contentment
We live in a culture that constantly tells us we need more. More gadgets, bigger houses, newer cars. But Paul reminds us in 1 Timothy 6:6–7 that, “Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.”
Contentment isn’t about settling or giving up on goals. It’s about learning to be grateful for what God has already provided. It’s about asking Him to show us when our “wants” are taking the place of true peace.
Trusting God with Today
Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). That prayer is a daily reminder that God cares about our needs right now. It also calls us to stop living in tomorrow’s worries.
So much financial stress comes from fear of what might happen. What if I don’t have enough for retirement? What if something unexpected comes up? The truth is, those things are beyond our control. But God is faithful. Trusting Him one day at a time frees us from fear and helps us rest in His provision.
From Greed to Generosity
Jesus also warned us in Luke 12:15 that life isn’t measured by possessions. Greed doesn’t always look like hoarding money; sometimes it shows up in subtle ways — overspending, chasing status, or always comparing ourselves to others.
The antidote is generosity. Proverbs 11:25 puts it beautifully: “The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself.” When we give, we loosen the hold money has on us. And in doing so, we reflect the heart of God, who gave us everything through Christ.
Final Reflection
At the end of the day, this isn’t about budgets, accounts, or dollar amounts. It’s about who we trust. Money will always come and go, but God’s promises remain. When we choose contentment, trust, and generosity, we start to experience a different kind of wealth — one that doesn’t fade with time.
Because true treasure isn’t in what we keep. It’s in who we follow.

Welcome to My Story
Thank you for visiting my page. I'm so glad you're here! I truly believe that Christ calls us into community, and we are all strengthened when we walk together in faith and fellowship.
Who I Am in Christ
At the heart of everything I do is my relationship with Jesus Christ. Through His grace, I've been blessed to serve in various roles that reflect His love and purpose for my life.
I am a follower of Christ first and foremost, and from that identity flows everything else: a first-generation college graduate who understands the value of perseverance, a shy extrovert who finds energy in meaningful connections, someone who finds joy in simple pleasures like lattes and the beauty of both sunny and rainy days (because God makes them all beautiful!). I'm a researcher and academic, a teacher who loves investing in others, a writer who hopes to share truth and encouragement, a mother and wife .. this is where my heart blooms, and an outdoor enthusiast (but terribly afraid of heights!) who is sees God's handiwork in creation.
God's Faithfulness Through Every Season
God has been unwaveringly faithful throughout my journey, even when the path wasn't easy. My childhood had its share of challenges, but looking back, I can see how the Lord was weaving a story of redemption, growth, and purpose through every difficult moment. His goodness and faithfulness have been the constant thread through every season of my life.
Called to Serve in Education
For nearly 25 years, I've had the privilege of serving in education...a calling I believe God has placed on my heart so I can be changed through the impact of families, students, teachers and leaders and to influence and encourage others. I earned my Doctor of Education in Higher Education Leadership and Management from Regent University, where I was reminded daily that all true wisdom begins with reverence for the Lord.
I'm grateful for this opportunity to connect with you, and I pray that in some way, our paths crossing might be part of God's beautiful plan for both of us. Feel free to reach out...I'd love to hear your story too!
Most of all, my story is one of self reflection, learning, healing, and lots of hard work. Phillipians 4:13
And I hope it encourages you
